The marking machine able to cut or not,  that is the most question I was asked when I was in Shanghai for APPP EXPO last week. During the EXPO, we displayed our fiber laser marking machine to audiences. We run this machine, let it to mark, to engrave. And because of the effect is perfect. So first, in principle, yes, the machine is able to cut metal indeed. But it is not same like laser cutting machine. Because of the laser source are different,the laser source of fiber laser marking machine is pulse laser. However, laser source of fiber laser cutting machine is continuous laser. The laser type is different. The more important is fiber laser cutting machine’s laser power stronger than fiber laser marking machine a lot.

So the fiber laser cutting machine is much easier to cut metal sheet than fiber laser marking machine. And when we use laser marking machine to cut metal, In principle, this is a process of repeat marking. Base on our knowledge, laser mark once will left 0.01m‘s depth on material. So if people want to cut metal by laser marking machine, in principle, you need let the machine repeat over and over again. And wait for a long time, then the materials should be cut off by the machine.

So, how about in reality? Is the machine able to do that. If you really want to cut some metal by fiber laser marking machine. First you need enough time to wait, after you confirm your material’s thickness. Then you can start the machine to do it right away. And the laser craft is a kind of heat treatment, so ensure pause the machine after a while, let the material be cool. If the machine continuous processing, the material is easy to out of shape. And the focal depth is limit. So ensure the focal point is on the surface as well.

When you got machine installed in factory. Then you can do some usual check and maintance as below.

a. First  Get familiar with the fiber laser cutter. Then  learn the safety, technical and management rules.

b. Engineer who operate machine should be trained .  And well known the machine. Also  Strictly follow the use instructions.

c. Make sure operators wear protective glass. To provent from any burn danger from laser .

d. Make sure the electrity power supply stable, gas , water in safe condition. When any emergency, turn off the main power.

e. Keep the room air clean and hygienic, for both machine lifetime and operator health.

f. Keep workshop temprature 5-30 °C. Also ensure the water chiller work normally , not freezing.

g. Always check the lubrication condition of the equipment. If any abnormality is found, it must shut down immediately for maintenance.

So if you turn on the laser without authorization, you will be at your own risk.

h. Also operator can not leave the production site in the boot state. And to prevent “rocker” hit the cutting head.

Carbon Steel.

Carbon Steel is not a high-reflection material. It is not like aluminum or brass. This material is the most suitable material for fiber laser cutting. For the cutting effect, any machines you can find in the market are able to cut carbon steel with a perfect effect.  The application of carbon steel is more and more extensive. The maximum thickness of carbon steel plate can be cut by modern laser cutting machine up to 20MM. the cutting seam of carbon steel can be controlled in the range of satisfactory width by using oxidation melting cutting mechanism, and the cutting seam of thin plate can be narrowed to about 0.1mm.

Stainless Steel.

Laser cutting of stainless steel, using the energy released by a laser beam to the surface of a steel plate to melt and vaporize the stainless steel. Laser cutting of stainless steel is a fast and effective method for manufacturing of stainless steel sheet as main component. Cutting speed, laser power, air pressure and so on are the most important technological parameters affecting the cutting quality of stainless steel. Compared with low carbon steel, stainless steel cutting requires higher laser power and higher oxygen pressure.

But the stainless steel cutting achieves satisfactory cutting effect, it is difficult to obtain the completely non-stick slag cutting seam. In general, high pressure nitrogen and laser beam coaxial injection are used to blow away molten metal so that no oxide is formed on the cutting surface. This is a good method, but more expensive than conventional oxygen cutting. One alternative to pure nitrogen is to use filtered compressed air in the workshop, which consists of 78% nitrogen.

The laser cooling water temperature must be above the dew point temperature. That is the basic requirements.

Please pay attention to avoid condensation on the inside and outside of the cooling laser.  when you use your own air conditioner.

Self-contained lasers may still cause condensation in the internal environment.

There are many lasers with self air conditioner. So when you use this kind of laser in the working environment, the cooling and dehumidification of the air conditioner greatly reduces the dew point temperature of the environment inside the laser. Generally, the cooling temperature of the industrial air conditioner is the same as the cooling water temperature.

When temperature is lower than 38 °C,  air conditioner can maintain the safety of the environment inside the laser. But the surface of the laser casing may have condensation. If the condensation does not form a flowing water droplet, it is safe. If there is a large amount of flowing water droplets and there is obvious water stain around the laser. So a safe and non-condensing working environment is a must for the air-conditioned laser.

When the ambient temperature is higher than 38 °C, the cooling capacity of the industrial air conditioner is not enough to maintain the safety of the environment inside the laser, and the internal environment condensation will still occur. After a long time, the external environment will also follow the condensation. Therefore, there is no obvious heat source around the laser.  And the hot air outlet of the water cooler cannot face the laser.

In order to eliminate the risk of condensation in the laser environment, you could configure a separate air conditioning room for the laser.
Avoid condensation on the processing head
If the processing is not normal when the season changes or the temperature changes greatly on the day, it can be checked whether the condensation inside the processing environment occurs.

8. Keep the laser, the bed, and the surrounding area clean, orderly, and free of oil. Work pieces, plates, and scraps are piled up as required.

9. When using gas cylinders, crush the welding wires should avoid leakage accidents. The use and transportation of gas cylinders should comply with gas cylinder monitoring procedures. Do not expose the cylinder to sunlight or near heat sources. When opening the bottle valve, the operator must stand on the side of the bottle mouth.

10. Observe high pressure safety regulations when servicing. Every 40 hours of operation or weekly maintenance, every 1000 hours of operation, or every six months of maintenance, should be performed in accordance with regulations and procedures.

11. After turning on the machine, manually start the machine at low speed in X and Y direction to check if there is any abnormality.

12. After a new part program is entered, it should be tested and its operation checked.

13. When working, pay attention to observe the operation of the machine tool to avoid the cutting machine getting out of the effective range or two collisions causing accidents.
