Is the fiber laser marking machine able to cut?

The marking machine able to cut or not,  that is the most question I was asked when I was in Shanghai for APPP EXPO last week. During the EXPO, we displayed our fiber laser marking machine to audiences. We run this machine, let it to mark, to engrave. And because of the effect is perfect. Our machine attracted lots of customers to circusee. Because we engrave the stainless steel and aluminum on the EXPO, so many customer ask us the question. Whether it can cut?

So first, in principle, yes, the machine is able to cut metal indeed. But it is not same like laser cutting machine. Because of the laser source are different,the laser source of fiber laser marking machine is pulse laser. However, laser source of fiber laser cutting machine is continuous laser. The laser type is different. The more important is fiber laser cutting machine’s laser power stronger than fiber laser marking machine a lot.

So the fiber laser cutting machine is much easier to cut metal sheet than fiber laser marking machine. And when we use laser marking machine to cut metal, In principle, this is a process of repeat marking. Base on our knowledge, laser mark once will left 0.01m‘s depth on material. So if people want to cut metal by laser marking machine, in principle, you need let the machine repeat over and over again. And wait for a long time, then the materials should be cut off by the machine.

So, how about in reality? Is the machine able to do that. If you really want to cut some metal by fiber laser marking machine. First you need enough time to wait, after you confirm your material’s thickness. Then you can start the machine to do it right away. And the laser craft is a kind of heat treatment, so ensure pause the machine after a while, let the material be cool. If the machine continuous processing, the material is easy to out of shape. And the focal depth is limit. So ensure the focal point is on the surface as well.

Fiber Laser Cutting Machine Consumption Parts

Fiber laser cutting machine running cost total include 3 parts, electric power, auxiliary gas and quick wear parts.
Compared with other cutting equipment, fiber laser cutter should be the lowest.

1. Electric power

Electric power cost main include laser source, servo motor, water chiller and control system.

Laser source power cost is 4 times of laser power. Servo motor power usually is about 5000w. Water chiller power cost is similar with laser source. Other parts electric power cost just about 1kw.
Additional, real machine running cost occupy 60%~70% of whole power. So rated power multiply 0.6 should be the running cost on electric power.

2. Auxiliary gas consumption

One gas tank is 40L in China.
A. N2 gas consumption is same for different thickness SS. Its consumption of continue cutting is about 20~30min/tank.
B. O2 gas consumption is decline when CS thickness increase. The thicker CS, the less gas consumption.
For example,
1mm CS cutting gas consumption is about 50~60min/tank.
10mm CS cutting gas consumption is about several hours/tank.

We recommend you use liquid gas, its cost will be much more lower then small tank. Most of our customer use it.

3. Quick wear parts

Main quick wear parts include nozzle and protective lens.
1st year their consumption is about 20~30 pieces per year, but the cost will be decline later.
As their consumption have big relationship with workers operation.

Nozzle 10usd/piece; Protective lens 15usd/piece.
So nozzle and protective lens cost is about 500usd per year.

4. Other parts.

Focus lens, ceramic rings and collimating mirror cost is not common quick wear part.
You just need arrange 1 set for spare, their total cost is 350usd/set.

Attention of Laser Generator in Winter – Alex

Laser Generator is the most important part for fiber laser cutting machine. Such as the heart for people. Due to its special inner structure, unfit operation may make some core parts broken in low temperature. So also we need take care on the maintenance of laser source in winter.

Matters need attention of laser generator

  • Usually laser source’s working temperature is 10~40℃. Before operate fiber laser cutting, all worker should check the user manual carefully and operate machine according to the user manual.

  • Low temperature will cause freeze inside of laser source.

We need add glycol antifreeze in the water chillier and recommend AntifrogenN brand. The volume should be about 10~20% of total. For example, if the volume of water chillier is 100L, the antifreeze can’t more than 20L. But pls remember propylene glycol is forbidden.

The temperature will be more lower at night. If the water pipe part is outside of room. we recommend keep water chillier running. At the same time, if your laser source is more than 2kw, laser source’s 24V power supply must keep open when water chillier running.

  • If outside temperature of laser source between 10~40℃, no need add any antifreeze. Additional, when summer coming, remember clean the antifreeze first then add water again.
  • If laser generator can’t working for long time in winter, be sure to discharge all water in laser source’s inside water pipe.
  • When laser source have issues and need repair in winter, be sure to discharge inside water before package and shipment.
  • If laser power is more than 2kw, laser source must keep connecting with 24v electric when water draining. Otherwise inside water pope can’t discharge water as the value can’t be open.

Metal fiber laser cutting problem and solution – Alex

Metal fiber laser cutting main use high temperature gasify metal material and blow the gas away under the help of inert gases. Compared with traditional cutting process, it have very high precision and fast cutting speed. At the same time, its loss rate is very low, so it have more and more wide application.

Due metal fiber laser cutting process, also we will face many different problems, follows is some common problems and solution. It can help us use this machine better.

Erosion on the sharp corners

When fiber laser cutting machine cut sharp corner, laser will turn to another side when finish one side. During this process, laser head will become ZERO then back to normal speed. Laser will stay on the corner parts for long time but laser power keep working. Due to the heat radiating area is very small near the corner so the corner temperature will be very high and metal will be melt. So the corners parts is not smooth.

Laser can’t cut through the metal

The most common reason is laser generator power attenuation so that the power is not enough to cut through the plate.

Additional, so high cutting speed, focus lens broken, laser path and voltage problems are common reason cause this problem.

Of course, material problems, auxiliary gas low pressure, water cooling system also may can rise this problem.

No laser output

Follow reason may cause this problem.

  1. laser generator is aged so the laser power become weak.
  2. Electric current is not enough so that the laser output is weak.
  3. Too many dust in the laser generator, it may pollute optical parts and laser light can’t go through.
  4. Laser power supply don’t work but cooling system keep working so that some parts freeze.

Cutting process is discontinuous

Due metal fiber laser cutting process, discontinuous cutting is very common. Usually it will bring large waste for our work.

Unreasonably program is the most common reason to rise this problem. Metal fiber laser cutting need close to the cutting surface. When we cut many different parts on one plate, program select lineation first then cutting acquiescently. It can avoid laser cutting head crash the cut parts and broken laser cutting head. When we white the program if some position is not closed, laser cutting will be discontinuous. 

Also, change auxiliary gas during cutting process also may cause this problem. We know auxiliary gas will blow away the gasified metal, when we continue cutting the same parts after change gas, the position may be little different with finished position.

In this case, how we can avoid these problem?  Next items we will discuss how to avoid these problems.

Laser Marking Machine

We have three popular models of laser marking machine. Fiber laser marking machine, Mopa laser marking machine, and Co2 laser machine. All of them use laser as the source to mark materials. The fiber laser marking machine and Mopa laser marking machine use regular fiber laser. But Co2 laser marking machine is different.The laser of Co2 laser marking machine passed through dense CO2. By this way, Co2 changed the original laser. To become a special laser. The laser come from Co2 is working on non-metal materials perfectly. So that is why, Co2 laser is a kind of popular laser machine in market. So its function is for non-metal materials’ processing.

However, I just mentioned the source of fiber laser marking machine and Mopa laser marking machine are same. So what is the different between them? The impulse of laser from fiber laser marking machine is constant. But Mopa’s impulse will changed in every second. Actually, according the source is same. So the materials they are working on is also same. Both of them could working on all kinds of metal materials. For example, carbon steel, stainless steel, gold, silver, brass, aluminum and so on.

Why we want Mopa keep changing?

In another word, what is the different between those two?

First of all, how we let the Mopa change its impulse anytime? Because we use JPT’s Mopa laser source, this kind of laser source is designed for mopa laser marking machine. Mopa is able to color marking by change impulse. That is the biggest function of Mopa laser source. In usual, customers buy it for color-mark stainless steel and mark alumina become black color.  But Mopa’s speed is slower than fiber laser marking machine and Co2 laser machine. And fiber laser marking machine is good at marking on metal materials. It is popular one because it is not only able to mark on metal materials, it also could do part of non-metal marking. More important, in some condition, customer could adjust the power to color marking as well.

In these days,i met with a customer from South Africa on the exhibition. He is a producer of stainless steel products. He sent us a mail  asking for marking on the coated stainless steel. Actually we have met with many customers asking for marking on the coated stainless steel. But he didn’t know whether our machine could mark on it or not. For this coated stainless steel, our machine could mark with no problem. However, this type material is a little different with the stainless steel.

For the coated stainless steel, the minimum we introduce to the customer is 30w. This type machine need remove the surfacing Spray paint firstly, and then do marking on the stainless steel.

Mopa fiber laser marker

Mopa laser is special fiber laser. It can do all work what we did with normal fiber laser. Its main advance is anodized alumium black marking and stainless steel color marking. As its pulse width is adjustable and frequency is big range.

Common operation mistake of fiber laser engraver – Alex

Fiber laser engraver is very common in all kinds of fields now. Although fiber laser engraver is very easy on operation, people can learn it very fast. Still there is many operation details not easy to learn, especially for some green hand, many small mistake may happen when they use machine.

Below is some common operation mistake, operator can avoid it well just they know it.

  • Forget take away the lens cap

There is one plastic cap under lens when we delivery machine. Many people don’t know it after receive machine, then test it directly. In this case, everything runs well but no any laser light show, even no red point. Also the laser will damage the cap and protective film of lens. So the first step is take away the cap before use machine.

  • No marking when machine running

When operator use machine, everything runs well. There is laser output, but no marking. The biggest possibility is laser head not on correct focus. We know galvo head laser machine must be on focus then it can work normally. If it is not on focus, machine only have laser light output, but no mark.

For machine operation, we must find its correct focus first. Below is operation video of how to find focus.

Ezcad software is common application of fiber laser engraver, its operation is easy, you can find its based operation in below video.

  • Boot order of fiber laser marking machine

so 1.Turn on main mechanical switch 

if 2.Turn on water chiller, air compressor and dryer power switch.

so 3.Turn on the machine power supply.

so 4.Open fiber laser generator power supply.

if  5.Turn on high pressure start switch.

if 6.Turn the fiber laser generator start switch to on.

so7.Turn on 24 volt control power switch.

if 8.Turn on the electronic shutter switch.

so9.Rotate the “Power adjustment” knob clockwise to a suitable value.

if 10.Turn on the laser working gas such as CO2, N2, auxiliary gas O2, etc.

Fiber Laser Cutting Machine running cost – Alex

Fiber Laser Cutting Machine have become very popular in most metal cutting factory. Several years ago, only some big metal cutting factory use fiber laser cutting machine as it is very expensive machine. Recently years, more and more small factory use fiber laser cutter replace old cutting tools. As machine cost is much more lower, may be only 30~60%. Additional, fiber laser cutter’s running cost is the lowest.

Of course, although fiber laser cutter have very low running cost, but it is not mean no consumable parts.

1. Electric Power

Electric power is necessary for all machine. Laser cutting machine’s electric power cost total include three parts, include laser source, water chillier and servo motor.

fiber laser’s photoelectric conversion is 25%, which is the highest in all laser machine. One set 1kw laser source will cost 4kw/h. 1000w fiber laser machine’s water chillier need use 3kw/h. Servo motor and machine bed parts total need about 4kw/h. So if one 1kw laser machine running in full power its electric power cost is about 11kw/h. Actually one machine’s real cost only use 60% power as these parts is not running always. In this case, its real cost is about 6.6kw/h. But one set 1000w co2 laser cutting machine’s power cost will be several times.

2. Auxiliary Gas

Usually we use O2 gas when cut mild steel and N2 gas for other material, such as stainless steel, aluminum and brass. For example, when we cut 1mm stainless steel, it need about 12kg/hour N2. When we cut 5mm mild steel, it need about 9kg/hour.

3. Quick wear parts

Fiber laser cutting machine’s quick wear parts all on laser cutting machine, include protective lens, focus lens, nozzle and ceramic ring. Protective lens and nozzle’s lifetime is about 1 month/piece. Focus lens’s lifetime is about 3 months/piece.  ceramic ring’s lifetime is about 1 year or more.

Except above parts, fiber laser cutting machine nearly have no other consumable parts. Compared with other cutting tools, its cost is very very low. So more and more people select fiber laser cutter with its price’s decline.
