The excellent characteristics of fiber lasers make more and more end customers pay attention to and consider replacing the original processing methods with fiber laser solutions in metal processing. With the localization of high-power fiber lasers, the cost of various core devices has been greatly reduced. So the selection threshold of high-power lasers has begun to disappear.

Single-mode and multi-mode beam quality comparison

In the cutting application, the focused spot has a great influence on the quality of the cut. The core of the single-mode laser is relatively thin and the beam quality is better than multimode. The energy distribution is Gaussian andthe intermediate energy density is the highest and the three-dimensional map is a sharp circle like the shape of the mountain.

 

The core of a multimode laser is coarser than that of a single mode. The energy distribution is smaller than that of a single mode. The three-dimensional image is an average of a single-mode spot. The three-dimensional image is an inverted cup. From the edge steepness, the multimode ratio is steep, comparing to the single mode.

 

Comparison of 1.5KW single mode and 1.5KW multimode laser with the same power

1mm thin plate cutting speed single mode is 20% higher than multimode. And the visual effect is similar. But from 2mm, the speed advantage is gradually reduced. Starting from 3mm, the speed and effect of high power multimode laser are very obvious. Shown below:

Therefore, the advantage of single mode is thin plate and the advantage of multimode is thick plate. Single mode and multimode are not worth comparing each other. They are all a configuration of fiber laser. Just like a car, the car is suitable for highway. And the off-road is suitable for mountainous. However, the car can also run on the mountain, and the off-road can also run on the road. Therefore, in the end, the choice of multi-mode or single-mode fiber laser depends on the processing needs of the actual end customer.

Notes on installation and disassembly of laser source from Fiber laser cutting machine

First is how to do installation of laser source:

 After the laser is placed in the designated detection area, the hardware control connection between the machine and the laser is performed.
Then please ensure that the cutting head and the jumper output lens are clean and the inner lens must be free of dust.
Next is to connect the laser jumper output section to the cutting head and mount it on the machine.
Then Connect the jumper output head and the cutting head waterway and other connecting lines.
The last is to turn on the water circuit and circuit, and turn on the laser without any abnormality.

Second to performace Cutting:

For first step, it is to adjust process parameters (cutting speed, cutting air pressure, focus position, nozzle size, cutting height, perforation parameters, perforation pressure, blowing delay, light emission delay, etc.). And rember to ajust thinner plates for different lasers according to the detection requirements of lasers of different powers Cutting test for thick plates.

Last is on disassembly:

First step is to turn off the laser, circuit, and water path. Secondly, remove the cutting head and jumper output head and clean the remaining water stains on the jumper output head.
Then disassemble the connection between the laser and the machine control line.

Choose a suitable laser machine size, power and laser source

First, choose suitable laser cutting machine size

When you have the cutting requirment. First thing to confirm is your cutting area. Then choose a suitable size. ususlly we have 1500mm*3000mm. 1300mm*2500mm size. Also can do 1500mm*1500mm,2000mm*4000mm,2000mm*6000mm size.

If you also cut pipe. we need to know how long is the pipe. We have 3m and 6m model on option. And also the min and max diameter of the pipe. So we can confirm which pipe claw you can use.

Normally the pipe diameter we can cut is within 210mm. For both pipe and plate cutting machine.

Second, choose suitable fiber laser cutting machine laser  power

Second is cutting  materials. Also need the max and main thickness of each material.  Then choose a suitable power for the thickness. We don’t suggest to cut the max thickness of the power limit.

For example, if 1000w fiber laser can cut 5mm ss max. We suggest your main cutting thickness to be within 4mm. Sometimes cut 5mm ss is ok. Because ususlly cut 5mm  with 1000w will shorten the laser lifetime.

For pipe cutting, we need to know if the pipe is seamless or welded pipe. Because welded pipe is not easy to cut, need to add power.

Third, choose suitable fiber laser cutting machine laser source

After we know what material you cut. we will know which kind of laser source is suitable .  There are IPG , Raycus, N-Light laser source in market now.

Mainly for stainless steel and carbon steel. IPG and Raycus laser source are enough. But for brass and aluminum, N-Light laser source is suitable. Because aluminum and brass are high reflective materials. If cutting with IPG or Raycus laser source. It will do great harm to the laser source. N-Light is especially for high reflective material cutting work.

After we confirmed all of these cutting requirments.  We confirm the fiber laser cutting machine size, laser power, laser source. We can confirm which fiber laser cutting machine model we need.Then you will get a good solution for your work.

The same fiber laser can do cutting, welding, drilling and cladding.

Many customers have purchased a fiber laser with a 2-way, 4-way or 6-way beam switch.

For example, one leg will have a 100 micron fiber for cutting,

a 200 micron for welding and 400 or higher for cladding or annealing.

The power can change to a different level and switched to a new delivery fiber in a matter of milliseconds.

Delivery fiber can support multiple work stations of up to 200 meters apart.

There are three main reasons:

1>Many of the components used by IPG are not available on the open market or do not meet the stringent requirements required for high power fiber lasers.

2>Vertical integration allows IPG to better optimize components for our unique systems, to respond quickly to customer requests and to bring product to market rapidly.

3>Finally, it allows IPG to closely control cost to maximize the benefit to our customers.

So it is necessary to have a good command of knowledge of these accessory parts.

Correct antifreeze measures of laser source

The storage temperature of  laser source is -10 ° C ~ 60 ° C, working temperature is 10 ° C ~ 40 ° C.

An extremely cold climate will cause irreparable damage to the optical parts of the laser source.

Therefore, at this low temperature, it is necessary to do the correct antifreeze measures for the laser source:

1) Store and use the laser in accordance with the storage temperature and operating temperature.

2) Buy a large bottle of car antifreeze without adding water, directly use in the laser water cooling system.

Notes:

1. Before using, drain all water from the water cooler, laser source, laser output head,

processing head and water pipe, and blow dry with air pressure not higher than 0.4 Mpa (4bar).

2. During the ventilation and drainage process,

check the direction of coolant inlet and outlet of QBH and QCS laser output heads.

“in” is the inlet and “out” is the outlet. It must be ventilated to the inlet.

If gas is introduced into the QBH or QCS outlet,

it may cause damage to the internal fiber (because the flow rate of the airflow is high).

3. Check the antifreeze capacity mark (freezing point temperature) on the outer packaging

of the antifreeze is lower than the minimum temperature of the local environment by at least 5 degrees.

Installation:

After placing laser source in the designated detection area,

the hardware control connection between the machine and the laser is performed.

Then ensure that the cutting head and the jumper output lens are clean and the inner lens must be free of dust.

Next,connect the laser source jumper output section to the cutting head and mount it on the machine.

Next,connect the jumper output head and the cutting head waterway and other connecting lines.

Finally,turn on the water circuit and laser source without any abnormality.

In the following articles, we would like to share some key points for choosing the most suitable laser machine. But before that, we need to figure out how the laser machine operates.

How to tell the difference on the laser source or laser tube?

On beginning to purchase a laser equipment, the first point we need to consider is the laser source or tube. Why? Cause it is the most valuable part of the machine.

1: Co2 laser tube

The market is filled with all kinds of Co2 laser machines and we must choose the best option for the work that we are going to do in the future.

Normally, the Co2 laser tube will be divided into 2 kinds–glass tube and metal tube. The main brands of glass tube will be RECI, EFR, Yongli in China right now. Glass tube is mainly used in engraving and cutting non-metal materials. Its beam spot will be bigger than metal tube, so it is not suitable for precision working. Metal RF tube is able to work over 20000 hours, much longer than the glass tube–about 5000 hours. 2: Fiber laser source

Fiber laser source will be much complicated to note how it works and inside components. For now, the world-class brand will be IPG from Germany, N-light from USA and Raycus-the best in China. They are the common laser source for chinese laser manufacture. Certainly there will be a little difference on them. If you need to cut high-reflective materials, such as aluminium, copper, silver etc, maybe N-light will be the first choice. And for less than 1500W laser cutting machine, Raycus will be our first suggestion, unless you have strong demand on laser source. Here we would like to share some videos:
